CHAPTER 8

Franklin and Colonel Pennsic watched the chopper from the Perth hover over the Valencia. Eight sailors rappelled down to the deck.

The dragon comm system was still working. After identifying the different factions, Parkers and Grimorcey showed them the list of explosives. “These are the caches found on the port side of the ship. Last week, guards were posted around the cargo and we could not get close enough to go through the other containers.”

“Where are the guards?” Hunnicut asked.

“We have them cuffed in the brig. There are twelve of them.” Parkers motioned to a hatchway leading to a stairwell on the port side.

“Are they under guard?” The captain in charge of the demolitions unit asked.

Parkers looked at the man behind Grimorcey. An exchange of Chinese was heard. “Chao says two of the freedom fighters are there. They have guns taken from one of the shipping containers. And ammo.”

Franklin turned to Lieutenant Soo. The sailor they used as a Russo-Chinese interpreter nodded.

Reevis spoke in Chumb. “I sense a Dragos on board. Are they with you?”

“There is an injured young female. We tried to keep her hidden. I would have had her in the raft, if possible,” Parkers replied.

Chief Reevis called to two of the dragons patrolling the sky. They quickly flew down and landed in the clear area of the deck.

“This is Lieutenant Morrdragon. He’s a trained corpsman.” Hunnicut spoke as the dragons morphed. “The other is Lieutenant Grebe. He will assist in helping the injured Dracos.”

Parkers called to one of the sailors. He waved the two Marines to follow him to a hatchway on the starboard side of the deck.

Half of the demolition crew took Grimorcey and his list to the port side of the containers. The other four started on containers on the starboard side. Parkers sent some of the other sailors to start opening what containers they could.

“Colonel.”

Pennsic lowered his binoculars and turned to Franklin.

“I plan to send a couple of planes out to scan the surrounding area. Not just behind the Valencia. I am also sending a chopper over to get more of our men onboard.” The captain turned to his second. “Mr. Saws.”

“Sir!”

“Have Chief Kenworth and his men take a chopper to the Valencia. I want more men onboard.”

“Aye-aye, sir!” The order went out.

Franklin picked up the comm mic. “Lieutenant Colonel Congers.”

The go ahead sound came over the dragon comm. Franklin continued in Chumb. “I am sending out Chief Kenworth and his men. You will need more men hunting for those explosives.”

An agreement came over the air waves.

In minutes, a battle dressed contingent of sailors loaded onto one of the choppers. The bird took off and turned toward the Valencia.

“Mr. Saws, I want eight jets in the air for recon. Send two in each direction.” Franklin moved to the sonar screen. The Nautilus was no longer in sonar range. The two cruisers were approaching fast. The Perth was closer than the last time he checked.

“Ms. Crawley, please inform the other ships of our plans.”

“Yes, sir.”

Commander Saws picked up the phone to the flight crew ready room and passed on the captain’s orders.
